The heart of the controversy lies in the ownership of the land, with a dozen villagers claiming their ancestral land was wrongfully sold to Kushner's investment firm, Affinity Partners.
The villagers' lawyer, Kostandin Beko, asserts that an Albanian court declared the villagers as rightful owners in 2013. However, the matter remains unresolved due to an appeal by Artur Shehu, a Miami resident with alleged ties to organized crime. Shehu, who fled Albania in 1999, has been under investigation in Italy for his business dealings with Italian mobsters. Albanian media now reports that Shehu is also under scrutiny by anti-corruption prosecutors for large-scale money laundering.
The project's troubles extend beyond legal disputes. Protests have erupted across Albania, with thousands taking to the streets to protect the wildlife-rich area from potential destruction.
