The increase in waiting times is particularly alarming given the concurrent rise in staffing levels and spending within the health board's emergency departments. Despite these efforts, patients are now facing dangerously extended waits for urgent care, with the median time between entering a hospital and being assessed by a medical professional reaching a high of 72 minutes in the 2025/26 financial year.
This situation has sparked a heated political debate, with opposition parties pointing fingers at the SNP government's handling of the NHS. Scottish Labour MSP Irshad Ahmed accused the SNP of failing to deliver on their promises to tackle the A&E crisis, highlighting the soaring waits and the strain on both patients and staff.
